ETEL Transformers Welcomes Brian Ropitini as New Chief Executive

ETEL Transformers Ltd, New Zealand’s largest manufacturer of distribution transformers, has announced the appointment of Brian Ropitini as its new Chief Executive.

Brian steps into the role following several months as Acting Chief Executive and brings a strong track record in manufacturing leadership, governance, and community partnership. He most recently served as Director of Manufacturing for Methanex New Zealand, where he led operations across a $5 billion asset base. His previous roles span Methanex Canada, NZ Synthetic Fuels, Petralgas, and TransAlta, giving him deep experience across the energy and industrial sectors.

A Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors, Brian also holds governance roles with Ara Ake – New Zealand’s Future Energy Centre, New Plymouth District Council, Tui Ora, and The Wells Group. He is known for his focus on operational excellence, health and safety leadership in major hazard facilities, and building high-performing, engaged teams. He is also recognised for forging strong relationships with community and regional stakeholders.

“ETEL plays a critical role in the decarbonisation of New Zealand and international markets through the manufacture of reliable, high-performance transformer products,” said Brian Ropitini. “I’m excited to lead ETEL through this next chapter, supporting our customers and communities as we embrace cleaner electricity, digital transformation, and the global rise of artificial intelligence.”

Brian’s appointment marks a significant step for ETEL as it strengthens its position in the Australasian and Pacific markets and builds export capacity through its Indonesian manufacturing arm, ETEL Indonesia. ETEL also supplies major international customers, including Singapore Power, and continues to grow its presence across Asia and the Pacific.

Jaun Park, Chief Executive of Unison Group and Chair of the ETEL Board, welcomed the appointment:

“We are thrilled to have someone of Brian’s calibre leading ETEL. His global experience, deep sector knowledge, and ability to anticipate customer needs position him perfectly to drive ETEL’s future direction.

As the world accelerates its transition to clean electricity and digitally enabled networks, ETEL has a significant role to play. Brian’s leadership will strengthen our innovation pipeline and expand our international impact.”

Brian succeeds Peter Leece, who has stepped down as Chief Executive as part of his transition to semi-retirement over the next few years after more than 30 years with the company. Peter will remain actively involved in the business in the newly created role of Group Technical Officer, ensuring continuity and knowledge transfer as part of the leadership transition.

“As part of the Unison Group, we are working to bring our companies closer together to deliver integrated energy solutions for both local and global markets,” said Park. “This leadership transition is an important step in accelerating our collective efforts toward a more sustainable energy future.”
